Jewelry has long been a symbol of personal expression, cultural heritage, and artistic creativity. While many of us are drawn to the allure of beautifully crafted pieces in store windows, there's a unique satisfaction that comes from making your own jewelry. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking to hone their skills, making your own jewelry is a fulfilling and rewarding journey.
Personal Expression
Everyone needs a creative outlet! It's human nature to need to express your innermost self, and without a way to do that we begin to feel blocked up and frustrated. I spent 25 years dedicating myself to being a wife, a mother and a teacher. At the end of the day, there was nothing left for ME. Needless to say, my dammed up creative juices were bursting at the seams. I grew up in a creative family. All my life I made music, I danced, I acted, I drew, my creativity was boundless. The adulthood happened and responsibility pushed aside creativity. Mind you, I do NOT condone that selfless behavior we women tend to adopt when we become mothers, not at all! We lose ourselves in others and in the end we lose ourselves. I didn't realize how lost I was. Then a friend invited me to a scrapbooking party and the dam was opened - at least a little. Over the next few years I started countless scrapbooks (let's not talk about how many I actually finished!) and filled an entire room with my scrapbooking parphernalia! But in he long run it just wasn't enough. Then one day on a whim I took a beading class at a local craft store, I made a perfect loop on the first try and I was hooked. As they say, beading is the gateway drug. Before long I had made the jump to metalsmithing and beyond. Now my children are grown and gone and I have retired from teaching, and now have my own business making jewelry and teaching others. Now my life is mine, I am happy and fulfilled, and have even more energy for those caregiving duties that never really go away. I am lucky, I now get to devote my life to creating. But it took my 25 years to realize what I needed, and I hope no one else goes through that. Find a way to express yourself, whatever it is. But I highly recommend learning to make jewelry! Creating your own jewelry allows you to design pieces that truly reflect your style and personality. From choosing the materials to deciding on the design, every aspect of the creation process is in your hands.
Unique Creations
Have you ever had a special event that you spent hours preparing the perfect outfit only to be underwhelmed with your department store jewelry? Have you ever shown up with the same earrings or necklace as someone else? When you put so much effort into your appearance, why leave your sparkle to mass-produced ordinary over-the-counter jewels? Handmade jewelry is unique. When you create your own pieces, you’re not limited to the mass-produced designs found in stores. Your creations are one-of-a-kind, and a reflection of you.
Therapeutic Benefits
The process of making jewelry can be incredibly therapeutic. It requires concentration, creativity, and patience, which can be a great way to relieve stress and focus your mind. Some jewelry-making tasks are mundane and repetetive, which allows our minds to slip into a subconscious state which is passive and calming. Some tasks require intense focus. Intense focus allows you to be totally present and to tune out excess sensory input, which reduces stress and anxiety. When I'm knotting pearls in front of the television I can sit back and relax and the repetetive actions become like a mantra that soothes the nerves. I have been known to drift off when knotting. When I'm soldering tiny jump rings that requires total focus, the rest of the world goes away. And however stressful it may seem while I'm working so hard to be sure not to melt anything, when I'm done I am totally clear-headed and pumped. In addition to the mental benefits, making jewelry keeps my fingers nimble, my hands and arms strong, and keeps me on my feet and moving. Who would have thought that making jewelry could actually make you healthier and happier?
Potential Income
Like many people, I enjoy going to art festivals and galleries. Art is amazing, but it can also be expensive. While I would love to fill my house with original paintings and sculpture and pottery, I can't afford it. But even as a teenager I found that I could usually find a little ring or pair of earrings that fit in my budget, and I loved wearing a piece of original art! People love being able to show off their handmade jewelry. Whether you make beaded earrings or high end gold and gemstone rings, someone will want it. If you find that you have a knack for jewelry making, you might consider turning your hobby into a small business. Many artisans sell their creations online or at local markets, turning their passion into profit.
So how do I get started?
Nowadays there are limitless opportunities to learn. Like I said, I took my first class at a local craft store. Then I got lucky and found a local art center that offered metalsmithing classes. Then I branched out, took advantage of my son living in the UK and stayed with him while I did my certification course in precious metal clay. Since then I have travelled far and wide to take classes to expand and hone my skills. I have a decent library, yeah the old fashioned kind with books and pictures. And I have taken advantage of the internet to give me access to infinite opportunities to learn new skills.
You don't have to go to such extremes to learn your craft. Unless you live way out in the boonies, there are very likely jewelry classes in your area. Check your local craft stores, do an internet search, and don't forget sources like Eventbrite or local websites that list and promote activies. YouTube is an endless source, but look for independent video and online classes. Join a community of fellow jewelry makers who can provide support, inspiration, and valuable feedback. Check with art galleries, museums, art supply stores to find guilds in your area. Look for local workshops, online forums, and social media groups where you can share your work and learn from others. But one word of caution: Don't race out and buy every tool and gizmo you see. No need to break the bank right off the bat. I can't tell you how many people I know that jump in and spend hundreds even thousands of dollars then never use all the stuff. Start with the basics and practice your new skills. Then you'll know what you need and what you don't.
Now where do you get your ideas? Look for inspiration everywhere. Nature, architecture, fashion, and other art forms can all provide ideas for your jewelry designs. Follow jewelry artists on social media, visit art galleries, and immerse yourself in different cultures to gather new ideas.
