This is a beautiful handmade silver pendant of a poinsettia plant in eco-friendly precious metal clay. It is a lovely nod to the holiday season and the traditional flower. The pendant hangs from a black leather cord.

Legend has it that one Christmas Eve many years ago down in the heart of Mexico, little Pepita was sad because she was too poor to have a gift to take to church for the baby Jesus. An angel told her to gather weeds and place them on the altar. Pepita cried with shame at her humble gift, but where her tears fell, the weeds sprouted into glorious crimson blossoms. Now the 30 varieties of the plant are grown by about 5,000 farming families in Mexico and they produce over 20 million plants each year! The plant got its nickname, "La Flor de Noche Buena," or the Christmas Eve flower" from Franciscan monks who noticed the colorful blooms around the Christmas holiday season and decorated their altars with it. The star-like shape of the leaves symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem. The seasonally ubiquitous plant is indigenous to Mexico and Central America and had been used for centuries by the native civilizations both as an ornamental plant, for dyes, and for medicinal purposes. The plant was officially named for Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico who is credited with introducing the plant to the U.S. in the 1820s.
